They are indeed too "cartoony" in style, something which just doesn't work for this setting, I feel. While technically good, I agree with most of the people here, that the portraits are not particularly fitting as they are. Portraits are a pretty big deal and I would love, as a community, to be able to vote to change them. But, maybe it's not so much detail as it is style. It's like a comic: where the writing could be amazing, but if the art doesn't so a good job of supporting it, the reader won't get into it.īrian made some good points, and I understand that under the scope of such a game that the portraits can only have so much detail. The character portraits, as they stand now, are pretty bad and only serve to detract from the experience of the game. I want to hold Dead State up to very high standards, because I know that it can reach them. Games like Arcanum, AoD, Baldur's Gate, KOTOR, and Silent Storm, all have unique portraits that are greater in detail than their character models, but still hold on to a level of consistency as well. I understand that there isn't a huge budget, but portraits should be an (comparatively) easy fix. They look as if there was one base model drawn over in different ways to differentiate them, because they all seem to have the same face and same eyes staring off to the side. The portraits shown are pretty bland and cartoony. Especially, since we've reached $330,000 with the Kickstarter. I would like a total overhaul of all the portraits. Since the interaction with NPCs is one of the main things you do in the game, it would be a shame to choose a bad style for portraits. I just don't think it makes a lot of sense to have these stylized, "dreamy-like" portraits in the game in terms of the setting AND the character. I mean, when you think about it - it makes sense that your character(the boss guy in the shelter) remembers people by their actual look, probably he even collected their stuff like wallets, so he could manage everything effectively. I would use that "realistic" style but made them more light, perhaps used the "driver's license" idea, because it would fit the realistic survivor zombie horror esthetic perfectly. I don't know if these portrait are from AoD, but they would be much better fit for Dead State, imo. The portraits we seen in the trailer are pretty bad. I probably just didnt make any sense at all, sorry On the flipside, the current Deadstate ones are a little bit too retro style and too much "dummyfied" like a doll. It seems the portrait is almoust telling a story, and you can imidiately imagine how the personality is, its like they are "alive". I assume they were built that way to consider a rather singular retro look, but i am personaly a bigger fan of portraits more in-line of those present here on the foruns for avatars (i assume they are from AOD?), for example : It doesnt bother me all that much but now that you mention it, they do look they could be improved. They seem a lot more bland in comparison. The Age of Decadence portraits ooze personality and attitude (I feel like one look at a portrait tells me a lot about a particular character), and I don't really get that same feeling from the Dead State portraits. But I am saying that given Dead State's focus on a very realistic setting, and given the fact that we're in Texas, it would make sense to see a lot of non-white characters, especially Hispanic people.Īnd yeah, I think the character portraits could use some work. I'm not saying this out of some desire to promote diversity for the sake of diversity or any kind of PC nonsense. Texas is mostly Hispanic and there are lots of black people there as well. The only criticism I've had is that they don't have a lot of clothing or hair variety in the Crisis Event, 4 out of 5 of the sub-leaders were white guys with short hair and a button down shirt.
